What do you do?

So you're done with flying for the time being and you want to unwind. For general chatter and to discuss non-Elite subjects, this is the place.

Postby sanctuary1952 » Sat Jun 27, 2015 11:25 am

Was an actor for some 20 years ( not famous :D ) ... retired and moved from UK to a spanish village in Andalucia and am now doing my first love...music.
Sing and play in a band, Louisiana, in Tarifa and local area.
Playing songs from the 60's - 70's ... Peas n Love hippie music... and some more modern covers from Van Morrison, Damien Rice etc.

Right now I don't do anything other than look for work after being laid off three months ago.

What I used to do was work in a call centre. What I want to do is spend my life writing. You would think that being unemployed would be ideal for somebody who enjoys writing and playing Elite, but there's just too much to do at the moment to be able to devote much time to either, which is frustrating.

And yes, predictably, I write science fiction, and no, I'm not yet published (don't think I ever will be, but I enjoy it). :)

I am a Property Tax Agent for an O&G corporation. My primary function is to negotiate values for upstream assets in Texas, Utah, Colorado, and Illinois as well as a refinery. I've been doing this now since 2013.

In the past I was a right-of-way agent for the State first and then for the City I live in, which means I negotiated real estate for the construction of freeways and infrastructure projects. I also was a mapping and title specialist as well as a civil service processor which means I researched historical records for the purpose of finding history on property and I "stalked" people to serve them court papers when they were being condemned (lot's of interesting stories there...) I did that for about 8 years before going into my "new" career in O&G.

Right after college I had a brief stint in car sales and before it I was an assistant mechanic and test driver for a performance shop. In my free time I race cars when I'm not buried in stuff to do.

I'm a database developer for a software house in Hampshire. Which is all good, except I live in Somerset. (for the non UK members it's about a 100 mile trip one way for me). This is why I disappear between Friday and Sunday every week. I have a place near work but go back home to see the family at the weekend.

I started out as an electronics engineer, working on what was laughably called 'mini' computers in the 1980's, (they were about the size of a large chest freezer). I still potter about with electronics occasionally as a hobby. Other interests include historical re-enactment and horse riding, (neither of which I have had much time for lately :(), and reading. I particularly like SciFi, (no surprise there), so if Sealurk has anything he would like to share..... just saying ;)

I'm a machine operator for a small sub-contract machine shop. If I get my lathe set just right I can scurry over to a computer and read the Elite forums.

Sealurk, it doesn't surprise me that you are a writer just by looking at the text you post online. I used to read a lot of Science Fiction when I was younger, but I'm not reading much now. I kind've got stuck on Michael Brookes official novel... I'm finding it difficult to read. It's more like an instruction manual than a book.

You should check out the Drabble Writing Contest. https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=5777

Even if you never intend to write anything as limited as just the one hundred words, the discipline of forcing yourself to write something every week and show it to other people would be a good exercise for you. I, on the other hand, have got no intentions of writing nothing. I just do it for the fun of it. But I think the participating is what my grammar is getting better, even just for posts.
